Land of the Giants
In the heart of northwestern Sri Lanka, where ancient wilderness meets expanding human settlements, I spent the entire afternoon immersed in the world of these gentle giants. By the edge of a lake, in the golden light of the setting sun, I watched as this herd of elephants moved through the landscape, their slow, steps leaving imprints on the land they had called home for centuries.
One figure in particular stood out: a tusker. Tuskers are extremely rare in Sri Lanka, making up only a small proportion of the elephant population due to genetics and centuries of poaching. Witnessing one in the wild is a privilege, providing a brief glimpse into a world that is rapidly disappearing. With habitat loss increasing and human-elephant conflict on the rise, the fate of these incredible creatures remains unknown.
This moment, though peaceful, is a reflection of a greater struggle. These elephants, once free to roam vast forests, now travel through fragmented landscapes where survival is a daily battle. Nonetheless, their presence exudes a quiet resilience, a testament to the wild's enduring spirit.
