I photographed this close-up shot of Julius, a well-known leopard, moving through the dense undergrowth of Yala National Park. His golden eyes, sharp and unwavering, were fixed on a potential prey or a disturbance in the environment, a mix of confidence and caution evident in his posture. Each step was deliberate, his muscular frame blending with the dappled shadows of the jungle canopy.
This image, captured in the fading light, shows the raw intensity of the Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya), a predator endemic to the island. As an apex hunter, Julius reigns over this wilderness, but I’ve witnessed firsthand the growing threats to his survival. Once kings of vast landscapes, they now navigate territories altered by human encroachment.
This moment embodies the silent resilience of an animal that has roamed these lands for centuries. But I can't help but wonder, how much longer will their silence remain unbroken?
